Polom, Kočevje

Polom ( or (:ˈpɔːlɔm); (ドイツ語:Ebenthal)〔''Leksikon občin kraljestev in dežel zastopanih v državnem zboru,'' vol. 6: ''Kranjsko''. 1906. Vienna: C. Kr. Dvorna in Državna Tiskarna, p. 40.〕 or ''Ebental'';〔Ferenc, Mitja. 2007. ''Nekdanji nemški jezikovni otok na kočevskem''. Kočevje: Pokrajinski muzej, p. 4.〕 Gottscheerish: ''Ebentou, Ebntol''〔Petschauer, Erich. 1980. "Die Gottscheer Siedlungen – Ortsnamenverzeichnis." In ''Das Jahrhundertbuch der Gottscheer'' (pp. 181–197). Klagenfurt: Leustik.〕) is a settlement in the Municipality of Kočevje in southern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region.〔(Kočevje municipal site )〕
==Name==
Polom first appeared in written records under its German name, ''Ebenthal'', in 1763–1787. The Slovenian name ''Polom'' may be derived from the common noun ''polom'' 'place where the wind or snow has felled trees', or from the prepositional phrase ''pod lomom'', literally 'below where a ridge transitions into a steep slope' or 'below a thicket'.〔Snoj, Marko. 2009. ''Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen''. Ljubljana: Modrijan and Založba ZRC, p. 320.〕 The German name ''Ebent(h)al'' means 'level valley' and is derived from the geography of the village.〔
